Students of the Zamboanga del Sur National High School Himig Chorale showcased their talents and skills in a rondalla concert dubbed as “Cuerdas”. The spotlight was also shared to the Pagadian Montessori Arts Guild as they belted out their singing gifts at a choral concert tagged as “Sari-Saring Tinig.”

Along the opening was also the visual arts exhibit which featured the works of six visual artists in the province. They were: Renato Albasite of Dumalinao; Jeody Bayobay of Tabina; Jenner Pandan, Chester Mato, Randell Villanueva, and Dr. Jose Armin Virata of Pagadian City.

The exhibit is transferred to the lobby of the Provincial Capitol after the opening.

In her message delivered by 1st District Board Member Ramon Blancia, Jr., Governor Aurora Enerio – Cerilles expressed her pride to the talents in the province that are showcased through the festival. She likewise stressed that arts could also play a role in achieving transformation in the society.

“This month – long celebration is a call to hope, a challenge to act, an invitation to commit, celebration of creativity and an affirmation of Filipino’s inner strength that can be a catalyst for social transformation,” she said.

What is ZALIWAN?

This is the province’s version of celebrating the National Arts Month every February, now known as Philippine International Arts Festival declared by Proclamation Number 683 Series 1991. The celebration aims to “promote Philippine culture and arts, highlighting the empowerment of Filipino creativity and imagination.”

ZALIWAN completes the thrust of PTCAO in “developing and promoting local tourism, cultural traditions and contemporary arts expressions.” It is the new addition to the three major festivals that have already been institutionalized: The ZamboSur Summer Youth Fest every April, Megayon Festival every September and Pasko Nato every December.

It celebrates the rich, artistic expressions of artists in ZamboSur. It reaps the creative outputs of the series of workshops, seminars and trainings that have been conducted over the last three years.

Other festival components include the theater performances dubbed as Patched and Twenty Questions, and the dance production entitled Hugis Galaw.

Patched was staged last February 21, 2010 at 10 Disco, Pagadian City. It re-staged the 1st non-verbal theater production in Western Mindanao, in which the first performance was last November 2009 at Hotel Alindahaw. It featured four homegrown actors of Performing Mindanao, who were Garry Zamoras, Effie May Palomo, Starr Clyde Sebial, and Satra Jawad.

Twenty Questions was held last February 20, 2010 also at 10 Disco. This was an intimate one-act play of two new homegrown actors of Performing Mindanao. They were Miss Zamboanga del Sur 2007 Irene Monieva and UGB Dancer Ralph Amoguiz.

Hugis Galaw is a contemporary dance production performed by young dancers and choreographers in the province. This showcases the works of local young choreographers, namely: Kristian Verdida, Raul Polego Jr., Satra Jawad, and Charie Reso-or. Their works will be performed by the KaZAulogan Performing Arts. This will be held at the Amusement and Events Center, Provincial Capitol Compound on February 25, 2010.

ZALIWAN is made possible through the support of its partners: Gaisano Capital Pagadian, kaZAulogan, Performing Mindanao and ZamboSur Tourism Club.
